VILLANOVA, PA – (Staff Report from Official News Release) – St. John’s and Villanova will meet tonight in an early-season battle where the winner will be in first place in the BIG EAST standings.
The Johnnies and Wildcats will play at 7 p.m. ET on FS1 at the Finneran Pavilion on the Villanova campus.
St. John’s goes into the game 13-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Villanova is 11-4 overall in 2-0 in the league. Even at 2-0, the Wildcats are the only unbeaten team in the BIG EAST. The Johnnies lead the BIG EAST in scoring, averaging 84.7 points while the Wildcats are 9-0 this year when holding opponents under 60 points.
Last year, St. John’s beat Villanova 79-75 at Wells Fargo Center, which snapped a 13-game Wildcat winning streak in the series. Shamorie Ponds led the Johnnies to the win with 26 points.
The BIG EAST schedule is dark on Monday.
On Sunday, DePaul and Marquette registered home court victories. The Blue Demons edged Seton Hall 75-74. Max Strus paced five players in double figures with 21 points. Forwards Jaylen Butz and Paul Reed each added 12 points and nine rebounds. Myles Powell led the Pirates with 16 points. Seton Hall is 2-1 in BIG EAST play while DePaul is 1-2.
Marquette defeated Xavier 70-52 to improve its record in the new Fiserv Forum to 11-0. Marcus Howard led the Golden Eagles with 26 points and Sacar Anim finished with 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting, and seven rebounds. Naji Marshall led the Musketeers with 21 points. Paul Scruggs added 17 points and 10 rebounds. Marquette is 1-1 in league play while Xavier fell to 1-2.
