SHENZHEN – Coach Gregg Popovich and USA Basketball’s senior national team’s quest for a FIBA World Cup will begin with matchups against Turkey, the Czech Republic and Japan.
The Americans are in Group E for the first round of the tournament that begins in China on Aug. 31. The 32 teams that qualified for the event, formerly known as the FIBA World Championship of Basketball, were all placed into eight preliminary round groups during the draw that was held in Shenzhen, China today.
The U.S. won the Worlds in 2010 and 2014. No nation has ever won it three consecutive times. The US lost to Greece in the 2006 Worlds in Japan and took home the bronze.
