FOXBORO – (Staff and wire service reports) – Counter to prior reports, New England Patriots rookie quarterback Jacoby Brissett will start over Jimmy Garoppolo against the Buffalo Bills, according to reports on-site at Gillette Stadium before Sunday’s game. The team evaluated Garoppolo’s throwing shoulder on Sunday morning and it was determined that he would not be ready to play, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported.
With Garoppolo missing his second straight game, star receiver Julian Edelman is expected to serve as New England’s emergency backup quarterback, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Garoppolo missed Week 3 because of a sprained AC joint in his shoulder suffered during the Patriots’ win over the Miami Dolphins in Week 2.
Garoppolo was limited in practice all week and was officially listed as questionable on Friday’s injury report. Brissett started against the Houston Texans in Week 3 but sustained an injury of his own — to his throwing thumb — in the 27-0 win on Sept. 22. Brissett passed for 103 yards and rushed for 48 more, including a 27-yard touchdown run. Brissett was limited all week and listed as questionable.
Tom Brady returns next week to lead the Patriots’ offense after serving a four-game suspension over Deflategate.
