BOSTON – The Boston Red Sox belted five home runs, two by designated hitter J.D. Martinez, as they scored 16 runs on 14 hits to defeat the hapless Los Angeles Angels, 16-4. The Angeles have lost eight straight, their longest losing streak since an 11-game spin in August, 2016.
Martinez hit his 26th and 27th dingers of the season and his longball efforts were backed up by right fielder Mookie Betts (20th), third baseman Rafael Devers (24th) and first baseman Mitch Moreland (14th).
Reliever Marcus Walden (7-1) was credited with the victory for Boston after he stepped-up in the 3rd inning after Brian Johnson allowed three runs in the top of the 1st inning, off an Albert Pujols three-run homer over the Green Monster at Fenway Park. Walden threw only 18 pitches to secure the win as he was backed-up by Nathan Eovaldi, Hector Velazquez and Josh Taylor, who all combined for four innings of one-run ball. Walden has not allowed a hit to the last 26 batters he’s faced, dating back to a July 28th outing against the New York Yankees.
Jaime Barria (4-6) took the loss for the Angels who dropped their seventh straight game of their current road trip, and their eighth consecutive game overall. The Angels are now (56-61) and mired 20.5 games out of first with the Houston Astros leading the division and winning their last seven in a row and 10 of their last 11 games.
Martinez went 4-for-5 while reaching base on an error in his final at bat. He doubled twice in addition to the pair of homers which were the 14th career multi-HR shots and the fourth of the current season. He last hit two HRs at Baltimore on June 14th. Martinez has hit safely in his last eight games and has an 18-game on base streak going. He has 26 doubles and the 27 homers and is one of only five American League players with 25+ HRs and 2Bs.
Moreland’s homer run marked his seventh RBI in the 10 games he’s been back from the IL (July 23rd).
