BOSTON – Former Michigan guard Charles Matthews suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament during a workout with the Boston Celtics, confirmed his agent. Matthews, who is expected to miss the entire 2019-20 season, will have knee surgery in his hometown of Chicago, according to agent Adam Pensack.
Matthews was expected to be a second-round draft pick.
“Injuries are tough, but Charles is an extremely hard worker and will be back stronger than ever,” Pensack told ESPN. “He had a series of outstanding workouts lately and has helped himself. Charles will continue that momentum when he returns to action.”
Matthews averaged 12.2 points and 5.0 rebounds in 34 games for Michigan last season.
The NBA draft is June 20.
