Williams is slated to play for the Celtics’ summer league team after getting off on the wrong foot as a pro.
First, Williams slept through a day-after conference call with reporters following the NBA draft.
Even after a side conversation with team officials, Williams missed his flight from Louisiana to Boston before the first summer league practice.
Williams, 20, is a two-time defensive player of the year in the Southeastern Conference. He has a 7-foot-6 wingspan and was rated by most draft experts as a top 20 pick.
Since the draft, Williams said off-the-court approach has been stressed to him by team management. He called missing the first summer league practice a wake-up call.
“Just accountability and just stressing that this is a job. Things are different in college so just knowing what you have and the opportunities are limited,” he said Tuesday.
